2012년 디자인역사문화전공을 창립하여 14년간 이끌어 주신 김민수 교수님의 정년퇴임을 기념하는 학술 업적 아카이브 홈페이지가 공식 오픈하였습니다.

김민수는 서울대학교 미술대학 디자인학부 교수로, 디자인 역사·이론·비평 및 도시·시각문화 연구를 중심으로 활동해 온 디자인역사문화학자이자 비평가이다. 서울대학교에서 산업디자인을 전공한 뒤 미국 프랫 인스티튜트(Pratt Institute)와 뉴욕대학교(New York University)에서 수학하며 제품 의미론(Product Semantics), 디지털 가상공간과 인식론, 예술 커뮤니케이션 이론 등을 아우르는 학제적 관점을 구축하였다.
한국 근현대디자인사, 탈식민성과 문화정체성, 북한 선전화와 시각문화, 한국 도시 정체성과 공공디자인, 한글 타이포그래피 등 폭넓은 주제에 걸쳐 연구와 저술을 이어왔으며, 『21세기 디자인 문화 탐사』, 『한국 도시디자인 탐사』, 『필로디자인』 등 다수의 저서를 통해 한국 디자인 문화를 비판적이고도 서사적인 시각으로 조망해 왔다. 또한 국내외 학술지와 학술대회, 공공 담론의 장에서 디자인을 사회·문화적 맥락 속에서 이해하려는 장기적인 지적 실천을 꾸준히 이어오고 있다.
34년간에 걸친 김민수의 학술논문과 저작, 논단, 평론, 기고문, 공공 프로젝트 등의 작업을 총망라한 이번 디지털 아카이브의 구축과 공개를 통해 디자인 학계에 역사•문화적 연구 기반을 제공하고 후진 연구자들의 활동에 지속적으로 기여하기를 기대한다.
Professor KIM Min-Soo's Retirement Archive
: Now Officially Open
The academic archive of Professor Minsu Kim is now officially open, celebrating his retirement and his 14-year leadership as the founder of the Design History and Culture major since 2012.
Min-soo Kim is a professor in the Department of Design at the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, and a scholar-critic whose work centers on design history, theory, and criticism, as well as urban and visual culture. After majoring inIndustrial Design at Seoul National University, he pursued further studies at Pratt Institute and New York University in the United States, developing an interdisciplinary perspective that encompasses product semantics, digital virtual space, and communication theory.
He has conducted extensive research and writing on a wide range of topics, including History of Modern and Contemporary Korean Design, Decolonialism and Cultural Identity, North Korean Propaganda poster and visual culture, Korean urban identity and public design, and Hangul typography. Through numerous books—such as Exploring Twenty-First Century Design Culture, Exploring Korean Urban Design, and Philo-Design—he has offered a critical yet narratively rich view of Korean design culture. He continues to engage in a long-term intellectual project to situate design within its broader social and cultural contexts, contributing actively to Korean and international journals, conferences, and public discourse.
This digital collection integrates 34 years of his scholarly work—including research papers, publications, critiques, and public projects. Our goal is to strengthen the academic bedrock of design history and culture, ensuring that Professor Kim’s lifelong dedication continues to inspire and support future researchers.
