Housewives’ Workroom: The Indoor Garden of Apartment Veranda in 1980s

주부는 현모양처이면서 동시에 수퍼우먼일 수 있을까? 이 글은 1980년대 아파트가 한국 중산층의 주된 주거 형태로 자리 잡아가던 시기 변화된 주부의 역할과 정체성을 베란다 실내정원 가꾸기를 통해 살피고, 사회구성원으로서 주부가 지닌 가능성과 한계를 짚어보고자 한다. 아파트에 거주하는 주부의 일상에 내재된 생산의 기제를 통해 이들의 정체성을 현모양처, 소비의 주체, 정치적으로 소외된 존재로 설명하는 데에서 한걸음 나아가 여타 사회구성원들 사이에서 자신의 목소리를 들어내고자 했던 존재로서 남긴 흔적을 찾아본다.

Is it possible for a housewife to be the Angel of the House and Superwoman at the same time? This article examines the role and identity of housewives in the 1980s when apartments became the main residential form for the middle class in Korea. In an attempt to look for traces left behind by those who spoke out their voices among other social members, this article argues that indoor gardening improved the quality of labor at a different point from other household chores, and furthermore, that gardens were a place of practice to enhance the social status of housewives.
