유럽한국학회(AKSE) 컨퍼런스 2019 연구발표
2019년 4월 11일(목)부터 14(일)까지 이탈리아 로마에서 개최된 제29회 유럽한국학회(AKSE, The Association for Korean Studies in Europe)에 정선아(박사연구생), 이정은(박사연구생)과 전용근(RCA 박사, 현재 서울대 강사)이 참석했습니다.
유럽한국학회는 격년으로 개최되는 유럽지역 최대의 한국학 행사로, 그동안 유럽 한국학자들이 연구해온 내용을 토대로 학술적으로 교류하는 행사입니다. 이번 29회 행사에서 디자인역사문화 참석자들은 [국경을 넘는 사물들: 20세기 한국의 디자인과 시각문화에 대한 트랜스내셔널 역사 연구] 라는 특별 세션을 조직해 함께 발표를 진행했습니다. 이 특별 세션은 빅토리아 앤 앨버트 박물관(V&A Museum)의 큐레이터 로잘린 킴(Rosalie Kim)선생님이 모더레이터로 참여하였습니다.

발표내용:
전용근은 한국의 1920-30년대 광고를 근대성의 재현으로 분석한 ‘진열된 근대: 근대성의 시각적 재현으로서 1920-1930년대 한국 광고 속 도안문자’를 주제로 발표했습니다. 이 연구는 일제강점기 조선의 신문 광고에 나타난 타이포그래피 디자인을 분석하고, 타이포그래피의 형식적/기술적 변화가 조선과 일본의 사회경제적 비대칭, 그리고 조선의 식민지적 근대성을 어떻게 반영하는지 고찰한 것입니다.
정선아는 ‘이데올로기의 시각양식: 1920-30년대 식민지 조선의 러시아 구축주의’를 주제로 발표했습니다. 이 연구는 1920-30년대 일제강점기 조선에서 러시아구축주의의 영향을 발견하고, 이미지와 타이포그래피의 활용양상에 있어서 본토, 또는 서구의 형식과 다른 조선의 시각적 특징을 포착하여 분석하였습니다.
이정은은 ‘새로운 상징의 탄생: 새로운 북한의 ‘이상적 국가 되기’를 주제로 북한의 국가 건설 시기에 집중해 시각 상징물의 시각화 방법의 기원과 특성에 대해 발표하였습니다.
Presentations in the 2019 Association of Korean Studies in Europe Conference
The 29th annual conference of the Association for Korean Studies in Europe, held from April 11 to 14, 2019 in Rome, Italy, was attended by Sun-A Jeong, Jung-eun Lee (D.D. candidates in Design History and Cultural), and Dr. Yong-keun Chun of the Royal College of Art. Held every two years, the conference is the largest of its kind for Korean scholars in Europe who interact with each other based on their studies.
At the latest conference, participants in design history and culture organized a special session called “Border-Crossing Objects: Transnational Histories of Design and Visual Culture in Twentieth-Century Korea(s)” and held presentations. This special session was attended by Dr. Rosalie Kim, a curator at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Content of presentation:
Dr. Chun presented “Displayed Modernity: Design Letters in the 1920s–1930s Korean Advertising as a Visual Representation of the Modern,” which analyzed Korea’s 1920s–30s adverts as a reproduction of modernity. The study examined typography design in newspaper ads in Korea under Japanese rule, and how the format and technical change of typography reflect the socio-economic asymmetry between Korea and Japan and the deformed modernity under colonialism.
Jeong presented “Visual Form of Ideology: Russian Constructivism in Colonial Korea of the 1920s-1930s.” The study discovered the influence of Russian constructivism in Korea under Japanese rule in the 1920s and ‘30s and examined the visual characteristics of the aspects of application of images and typography that are different from Japan or the West.
Lee presented the origins and characteristics of visualization techniques of symbols, focusing on the days of North Korea’s nation-building with the theme of “The Birth of New Symbolism: To be an ‘Ideal Nation’ of North Korea.”
