이 연구는 디자인사적 관점에서 루쉰의 일본 유학 기간에 이루어진 근대 디자인 실천과 경험을 주요 연구 대상으로 삼아, ‘기의종문’의 내적 원인과 전개 과정을 해석하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 구체적으로, 연구는 루쉰이 일본 유학기에 가졌던 디자인 이념과 그가 장정 디자인에서 활용한 시각적 요소들의 특징 및 변화를 역사적 맥락에서 고찰하였다. 이 고찰을 통해 ‘기의종문’이 “물질편향[物質偏至]”에서 “문화편향[文化偏至]”으로 전환된 구체적인 표현임을 밝혀냈다. 이러한 전환은 본질적으로 루쉰의 근대 의식 변화에서 비롯된 것이며, 그는 일본 유학 시기에 이를 문자적 언어와 시각적 언어로 통일성 있게 표현하였다. 루쉰의 디자인과 글에서 드러나는 내용의 일관성을 통해, 그가 1906년 이후 국민을 각성시키기 위한 “새로운 음성(新聲)”이 문학뿐만 아니라 디자인을 포함한 미술 영역에서도 나타났음을 확인할 수 있다. 따라서 루쉰과 그 의 사상을 연구할 때, 그를 단순히 문학가로만 이해해서는 안 되며, 문학 활동뿐만 아니라 디자인 활동을 포함한 예술적 활동도 함께 조명해야 한다.

Abstract
From Saving the Nation through Science to Enlightenment through Literature: An Interpretation of Lu Xun's 'Qiyi Congwen (棄醫從文)' from a Design Historical Perspective

This study explores Lu Xun’s modern design practices and experiences during his studies in Japan from a design historical perspective, focusing on the intrinsic causes and development of his concept of Qiyi Congwen(棄醫從文). It examines his design ideology and the characteristics of visual elements in his book designs within a historical context. The study reveals that Qi Yizongwen was not merely a shift in career but a transformation from material-oriented (物質偏至) to culture-oriented (文化偏至) thinking, reflecting his evolving modern consciousness. During his time in Japan, Lu Xun consistently expressed this transition through both verbal and visual language. His alignment of literature and design demonstrates that from 1906 onward, his “new voice” aimed at awakening the public was not limited to literature but extended to visual arts, including design. Therefore, research on Lu Xun should not be confined to his literary contributions alone but should also consider his artistic and design-related endeavors as integral to his intellectual and cultural impact.
