A Study on the History of Built-in Storage Furniture

in the Republic of Korea and its Meaning

 

 

인간문명의 발전과 수납의 역사는 함께 쓰여왔다. 물질문화의 급속한 발달 아래 각 사회의 수납공간과 수납가구는 형태와 기능이 다양해져 왔다. 특히 주거공간에서의 수납은 사적 재산을 저장‧관리할 수 있는 기능 뿐 아니라 일상생활을 쾌적하게 영위하기 위한 중요한 도구로서 주거공간 안에 위치하였다. 우리나라의 전통적 주거 공간에는 반침(半寢), 벽장(壁欌)과 같이 건물의 구조와 관련된 수장공간과 장(欌), 농(籠), 궤(櫃), 반닫이 등과 같은 여러 수납 가구가 있다. 
이러한 수납용 공간 및 가구들은 의식주가 점차로 근대화 되는 과정 안에서 급격한 변화의 과정을 거쳐왔다. 한국은 전통가옥에서 현대식 주택인 아파트로의 급격한 변화를 이루며 이에 맞추어 공간변화에 따른 새로운 삶의 모습들이 나타났다. 
이 글은 근대 이후 한국의 주거형태의 추이에 따른 수납가구의 변화 속에서 발견되는 한국적 특성과 그것의 주거문화사적 의미는 무엇인가에 대한 질문을 던지고자 한다. 이를 위하여 연구자는 전통적 수납 방식이 변이와 소멸을 거쳐 현재에 정착되기까지 과도기적 흐름을 따라 '붙박이가구'를 중심으로 한 한국 근현대 수납 공간의 변천사를 살펴본다.

The history of human civilization and the development of storage furniture has advanced hand in hand. Under the rapid development of material culture, the form and function of storage space and furniture have diversified. These furniture and space for storage went through the process of rapid change along with the house modernization. This article questions about Korean characteristics and historical meaning of storage furniture and relates it to the evolution of dwelling pattern since the modern age. To answer the question, this study examines the development of storage furniture in modern Korean history, specifically focusing on the built-in storage furniture.
