전통과 현대의 간극: 한국인의 죽음과 장례의식

The Gap between Tradition and Modernity: The Funeral Culture of Koreans

이 글은 현대 한국인의 죽음관과 장례의식과 관련해 전통과 현대의 간극에서 벌어지는 문제들을 비평한다. 이를 위해 죽음관과 장례의식의 한국적 특성과 변천을 역사적 맥락에서 검토하고 일제 강점기와 조국 근대화로 인해 전통성이 타격을 입는 과정을 살펴보았다. 또한 뒤이은 산업화·상업화의 영향으로 장례의 기획과 수행의 측면에서 여러 균열이 발생하였다. 이러한 변화들은 장례의 절차와 용품, 매장의 방법과 애도의 방식 등 여러 시각적 현상에 반영되어 드러난다.

This paper criticizes the idea of death and the funeral ceremony of contemporary Korean by reviewing the gap between tradition and modernity. It was discovered that the funeral culture was damaged going through Japanese colonization and modernization of the fatherland(choguk kŭndaehwa). Also, industrialization and commercialization that followed influenced the practice of funeral ceremony. These changes are conspicuously reflected in visual phenomena, such as funeral procedures, supplies, methods of burial and mourning.
