제주 4.3사건 상징디자인으로서 동백꽃 연구

이 연구는 제주 4.3 사건과 관련해 동백꽃이 어떤 과정을 통해 상징 디자인으로 디자인되고, 나아가 어떻게 시각문화를 형성하게 되었는지 밝히고자 한다. 제주 4.3사건은 다양한 학문적 측면에서 연구가 이루어지고 있으나, 디자인 분야에서의 학술적 연구는 아직 이루어지지 않았다. 따라서 디자인 역사문화적 관점은 이 연구분야를 더욱 입체적으로 이해하는데 도움이 될 수 있다.
현재 제주에서는 붉은 동백꽃이 제주 4.3사건의 상징 디자인으로 사용되고 있다. 하나의 시각 요소가 대중들에게 각인되어 일상생활에서 쓰이기까지는 수많은 필연적 사건들이 작용한다. 따라서 제주 4.3사건을 상징하는 이 은유적 표현이 사회적으로 인정받고, 사람들이 그 방식에 동의하여 지금까지 널리 쓰이게 된 현상에는 분명 여러 가지 상호작용이 포함되어 있을 것이다. 제주에서 동백꽃이 시각문화를 형성한 현상에 대해 ‘어떻게 인식되었는가?’ 또는 ‘어떻게 상징으로서 의미를 갖추게 되었는가?’와 같은 질문을 통해 디자인사적 연구가 가능하다. 제주 4.3 사건의 상징 디자인에 대한 이 주제는 예술 문화적, 교육적, 정책적 상호작용을 포함하여 다층적 관점에서 연구되었다. 이 연구를 통해 제주도의 시각문화의 한 면을 분석하여 미래 4.3사건과 관련된 제주의 상징 디자인이 나아가야 할 방향에 대해 논하고자 한다.

On Jeju island, the Dongbaekkot(red camelia) is used as a symbol design for the Jeju 4.3 Incident. This study aims to clarify the process of how the red camelia was designed as a symbolic design and how it has formed a visual culture about the Jeju 4.3 Incident. Academic research and access in the field have been conducted in various aspects. However, it hasn’t been carried out in the field of the theoretical design area. Therefore, conducting research on the Jeju 4.3 Incident from a design historical and cultural point of view is significant.
Numerous inevitable events work until one visual element is imprinted on the public and used in daily life. Therefore, this socially recognized metaphorical expression is a valuable artefact that has enough worth to be researched. It is possible to study in terms of design history and culture through questions such as “How was the red camelia recognized in Jeju?”, and “How did it come to have the meaning as a symbol?” The study must have multi-layered perspectives including artistic, cultural, educational, and political interactions. Centered on the ‘visual culture of Jeju 4.3 Incident’, this research could allow a new understanding of the existing perspectives of how important designed symbols could be used socially.
