Stainless Steel Rice Bowl: Banal Nationalism and Object as an Actant

스테인리스 밥공기는 언제부터인가 일부러 의식하지 않고서는 눈에 띄지 않을 만큼 평범한 사물로서 한국인들의 삶 속에 자리매김했지만, 바로 그와 같은 이유에서 스테인리스 밥공기에 대해 궁금증을 가지는 이들은 많지 않다. 사소하고 평범한 사물은 종종 일상의 배경으로 스며들어 잊혀지곤 한다.

이 연구는 ‘스테인리스 밥공기’라는 일상적인 사물이 ‘행위소(actant)’로서 어떤 힘을 가지는지 진단하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 사물의 일대기를 따라가는 물질문화연구의 방법을 취하며, 재료와 사물, 제도와 담론이 얽히는 과정 속에서 새로운 사물이 탄생하는 순간을 추적하고 그 의미를 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 스테인리스 밥공기를 둘러싼 거시적인 정치 사회적 변화와 그에 대한 미시적인 반응을 교차로 살펴봄으로써 스테인리스 밥공기가 한국 사회의 일면을 어떻게 담아내고 있는지 고찰하고자 한다.

Stainless rice bowl in Korea has positioned itself as an everyday prosaic object that is almost unnoticeable without intentional awareness. For that very reason, not many people are curious about stainless rice bowl. Mundane and ordinary things are often forgotten, blended quietly into the background of everyday life.

This study aims to diagnose the power of an everyday object called ‘stainless rice bowl’ as an ‘actant’.

It takes a method of material culture research that follows the biography of objects, and aims to track the moment when a new object is born within the process of intertwining materials, objects, systems, and discourses and reveal the meaning of that process. By looking at macro political and social changes surrounding stainless rice bowls and microscopic reactions to them, this study would like to examine how stainless rice bowl captures one aspect of Korean society.
