What were the similarities and differences between the building name plaques or hyeonpan on the western style palace buildings that emerged during the Daehan Empire period and those on the traditional buildings? What changes were brought about by the emergence of western style buildings in the palaces where strict traditional order and customs were maintained? And how did they affect the architectural element of the hyeonpan? This essay delves into the formal characteristics and the significances of hyeonpan on the Gwanmungak Library in Gyeongbokgung Palace, which is known as the first western style palace building to the Jangseogak in Changgyeonggung Palace, built in 1915.
